Little Lobes Information

First piercings are a big deal, and at Inksmith Tattoo & Piercing, our piercers are determined to make your kiddos’ first piercing experience as enjoyable and safe as possible. At our studio, we want to make sure every child is well accommodated by providing a welcoming and sterile environment. Moving at the pace of your child is of the utmost importance at our studio, to ensure they are comfortable and confident with their decision during the piercing process.

Please read the following information before booking your child’s appointment, and check the box when you have read completely through each section. If special accommodations are needed for your child, please reach out at 720-985-4259 or email inksmithcolorado@gmail.com before scheduling.

  1. Little lobes piercings are for children 2 months old to 12 years of age. Children 6 years and younger require a consultation with one of our piercers, at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. Appointments are required and available from open until 5 pm, depending on piercers available.
  2. For our Little Lobe consultations, we will start with you and your child getting to know our piercer! Short paperwork asking some basic questions will also be involved. Once that paperwork is completed, our piercer will take you and your kiddo to look at our jewelry options and tour our studio to get familiar with the environment. Doing this also helps our piercer determine if your child is ready to get their lobes pierced.
  3. Your child MUST HAVE a form of identification to receive any service from Inksmith. For children aged 12 and below, we require either a birth certificate (the original, not a copy), a passport, or a school ID such as issued through Infinite Campus, which we can take digitally. You and your child must have matching last names, and if you do not, you must provide additional documentation such as a marriage license, adoption/custody papers, or the family information section on Infinite Campus. Call the studio anytime for clarification on our ID requirements.
  1. Inksmith has a NO unattended child policy. All children must have an adult present who is not receiving a tattoo or piercing. When it comes time for your child to get pierced, families are allowed to have one child and two adults in the piercing room. No additional friends, family, or children will be allowed in the piercing room. This is for the safety of everyone involved. If you have two or more children coming in for a piercing, there must be two or more adults present to actively supervise (one adult per child).
  2. Your child’s first piercing is a special experience, and photographs are absolutely allowed in the piercing room! However, we DO NOT allow any videotaping in the piercing room.

For kiddos, we offer a tandem piercing option! Tandems are when two of our piercers are in the room with you and your child, and the piercing is happening simultaneously to make the process as quick and painless as possible. If this is an option that you and your child are most comfortable with, please let us know during the time you book your appointment.

We want every first piercing at Inksmith to be a successful one. If your child has sensitive ears, a nickel allergy, or just has bad luck with earrings, we have jewelry to accommodate for that. Everything we pierce with will be made of ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium, no matter the age. For earlobes, we start piercings off with flat back labret-style threadless posts— this is what actually keeps the piercing channel open. These titanium studs are biocompatible, nickel-free, high polish and low porosity, so the jewelry will not harbor bacteria during healing (as long as it is cleaned regularly as per our aftercare instructions).

We will pick the gauge and length most suitable for your child’s ears- it will be your job to pick the decorative ends. Our ends are set in that same grade titanium, with prong-set Swarovski gems and bezel set natural and synthetic stones available. We also have ends made from solid 14-18k gold, manufactured to APP standards to be biocompatible and hypoallergenic.

  1. Upon arrival, you will be asked to file a hold harmless agreement on a digital device. Inksmith requires a parent or guardian to be with the child throughout the duration of the piercing appointment, as well as provide identification for both parent and child. Please bring a state-issued or federal-issued ID for yourself. Children 12 years of age and under will need a birth certificate or passport showing matching last names with the parent/guardian present. If the last names do not match, a birth certificate or legal documentation claiming guardianship will need to be shown. For any and all inquiries in regards to Little Lobe piercings at our shop, please call us at 720-985-4259 or email inksmithcolorado@gmail.com.
  2. Once you’re all checked in and paperwork has been complete, one of our piercers will help you look at all our jewelry options! If you’re looking for a specific type, color, brand of jewelry, or if you’d like help selecting the perfect piece, our piercers are here to help! After the jewelry has been selected, a piercer will have you wait while the jewelry is sterilized. The process to sterilize takes about 15 minutes.
  3. After your new jewelry has been sterilized, your piercer will explain the step-by-step process of how the piercing will go down. From there, the piercer will mark the placement of the jewelry. During this time, if you or your kiddo would like to change the placement or have any questions/feedback, now is the opportunity to speak up.
  4. Once everything is all even and you and your child are ready, it’s time to pierce! Again, our piercers will move at the speed and comfort of your child. When your kiddo is pierced, your piercer will then go through all the aftercare instructions.
  1. When your child gets a piercing at Inksmith, our piercers will talk both you and your kiddo through each step of how to heal the new piercing. You’ll also receive a copy of our aftercare instructions via email, as well as a little goodie bag with an aftercare instruction pamphlet. But just in case you forget, please read the instructions below.
  2. For your new piercing, it’s normal and expected for your fresh piercing to be red, sore, and sensitive. It’s also normal for your piercing to secrete some kind of puss/crust, whether it’s red/orange/yellow/white, or clear. It is your responsibility to keep your new piercing clean. Clean your piercing with saline solution, Q-tips, and/or non-woven gauze 2-3 times a day for the first week and then twice a day for the remainder of your healing process. DO NOT use any kind of alcohol, peroxide, bactine, bacitracin, or soap.
  3. Please DO NOT submerge your piercing in any bodies of water such as pools, lakes, oceans, hot tubs, or baths for at least two weeks. Showers are great and can be taken right away. Make sure your piercing is the last thing you rinse off to ensure no soaps or conditioners are left on your piercing. If your child bathes or showers nightly, please dry their hair before bedtime to reduce the moisture and pressure combination, which is the leading issue in healing lobe piercings.
  4. DO NOT twist or turn your jewelry. The more you leave it alone and keep it clean, the faster it will heal. In the case that you must touch your piercing, make sure you thoroughly wash your hands before and after.
  5. DO NOT sleep on your fresh piercing. If you’ve received an ear piercing, try a travel pillow (horseshoe pillow or airline pillow) to sleep on. Instead of the pillow going around your neck, slide it into a pillowcase. When you lie on it, your ear will go in the little hole, relieving pressure, while still supporting your head.
  6. Most piercings are done with a post that is a bit longer than what you need, to allow room for swelling and cleaning. At about 3-6 weeks, swelling should have subsided, allowing your jewelry to be downsized. Downsizing is a crucial part of healing; if jewelry is left without downsizing, migration and other issues may occur. Lobe piercings take approximately 10 weeks to heal. Keep the initial jewelry in for the full 10 weeks. After 10 weeks, feel free to change the jewelry into anything you’d like, keeping something in for the first full year to make the piercing viable. Keep in mind that we are always happy and willing to help change out the jewelry if you need any assistance!
